Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
